“You can be confident that everything is above board here.”

A Disturbing Revelation

In an unexpected twist, it has come to public attention that while Elon Musk’s team claimed to be aiding a government agency, they were secretly inputting sensitive information into AI software without anyone being aware.

As reported by The Washington Post, employees at the Department of Government Efficiency—including some teenagers—have been leveraging AI technology to probe into the Education Department’s programs and finances, all aimed at cutting federal expenditures in line with Musk’s agenda.

Details surrounding the AI tool remain unclear; however, it is confirmed that the software is being accessed via Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform. The data undergoing analysis includes information about grant managers and sensitive financial documents.

In light of these disclosures, the education department’s newly appointed deputy assistant secretary for communications reassures the public that all activities are being conducted transparently.

Madi Biedermann, in a statement to WaPo, highlighted that the team is committed to improving the Department’s efficiency, accountability, and service to taxpayers. “You can be confident that everything is above board here,” she asserted.

Data-Driven Decisions

Beyond the ethical dilemmas linked to Musk’s involvement and the young DOGE employees having access to sensitive data, the application of AI in this context raises significant safety concerns.

Under the previous Biden administration, federal agencies were urged to refrain from using AI until thorough safety assessments and guidelines were put in place, according to WaPo.

Moreover, major corporations such as banks and Amazon have restricted employee access to advanced AI models due to concerns over potential data breaches. Numerous studies have drawn attention to the security risks inherent in leading AI technologies, making them vulnerable to cyberattacks.

Alondra Nelson, an AI policy expert from the Biden administration, voiced her alarm regarding the unrestricted deployment of AI in various sectors. “Is it wise to introduce these tools into government and society without appropriate safeguards?” Nelson posed.

Recent reports, along with sources cited by WaPo, indicate that Musk and DOGE are planning to employ AI to streamline government operations, specifically targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

An anonymous employee from the education department indicated that DOGE staff are rapidly compiling extensive data, including personal information of millions of federal student loan borrowers, as per the report.

“They have a clear strategy to gain access to the data,” the staff member informed WaPo. “Once they get in, it’s nearly impossible to halt their activities.”
