When I first stepped onto TikTok, my main intention was to engage with a wider audience and introduce them to the incredible benefits of the African net sponge, a beloved item from my childhood in West Africa known as Sapo. This eco-conscious alternative to traditional loofahs is not only long-lasting and machine washable, but it also cleans thoroughly and dries quickly.
The response to my TikTok content, which focuses on educating viewers about the advantages and proper use of the African net sponge, was overwhelming. In August 2023, one of my videos went viral, leading to a remarkable spike of 300 orders in just one day. This initial success fueled our growth, culminating in an astonishing weekend in November when we received 10,000 orders in a single go. We quickly transitioned from packing orders in my basement to establishing a dedicated team of seven full-time employees, managing up to 500 orders each day.
Our collaboration with suppliers in Nigeria has been a game changer, not only scaling our business but also significantly benefiting their communities—growing from a small workforce of two to an impressive 100 employees. This narrative of growth resonates deeply with our customers, who value our dedication to making a positive impact both locally and internationally.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of TikTok Shop, which currently drives 85% of our sales, we are excited to explore new methods of growth and strengthen our community connections. While our journey has had its challenges, the promise of new opportunities and the chance to continue making a difference inspire us to move forward.
